ART104

ART104 is an antibody against a novel cancer target.
Currently in the advanced stage of ‘lead’ development, ART104 has been shown to improve the effects of standard chemotherapy in a mouse model of colorectal cancer. In April 2008 Arana entered into a 50:50 co-development arrangement with major Japanese biotechnology company Kyowa Hakko Kirin (KHK). KHK with its US-based subsidiary, Biowa, has achieved extraordinary levels of antibody potency by application of its proprietary technologies; POTELLIGENT® and COMPLEGENT™. The co-development arrangement enables the application of KHK’s impressive antibody enhancement technologies to potentially improve the chances of success of this powerful anti-cancer drug. Arana and KHK will share in the potential commercial returns.
ART104 is under development for colorectal cancer, however, Arana anticipates that it may also be effective for the treatment of other solid tumours. Colorectal cancer is one of the ‘big four’ tumour types, the third most common cancer to affect both men and women, as well as the third-leading cause of cancer-related death. The current market for the treatment of colorectal cancer is estimated to be in excess of US$5 billion annually.
Arana and KHK plan to generate a potency-enhanced humanized lead antibody, and progress it through manufacture and preclinical safety testing before entering the clinic. Assuming smooth progress of the development, clinical trials will start between 2010 and 2011.
